MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS

Denotation:
The magazine cover shows a colour photograph of a male, who is facing the camera however you're unable to see which way his eyes are looking because he is wearing glasses. The camera is a medium-close up shot, which shows the waist upwards. He seems to be standing by the way his posture is although you can't tell. One of his hands is shown which he is flipping his ring finger. The background seems to be a building but not fairly visible because it is blurred out. Behind the man is the Vibe masthead, which there are also three cover-lines in front of him. Also there are also other headings, which are all of different colours like; baby blue, white, yellow, black and red. The photographed man's name is at the top right beside the left side of his face. A web address was also placed on the magazine at the bottom right hand corner and also beside the bar code, which that is also visible on the left hand corner.
Masthead:
Masthead:
The Vibe masthead is very memorable because of the big large bold font which is used: dodger blue is used for this particular magazine cover. The word 'vibe' is a word which describes how someone is feeling, possibly signifying that the magazines relates to everyone. The font used is a San-serif font which gives the impression that the magazine is an in formal magazine which will relate to anyone of any respectable age. The font is all in capital letters and are all separated by a gap the bold an large letters links to how the photographed male is positioned, which he is in a straight and well structured position. The word vibe is a slang used amongst the younger generations, which is usually related to music linking back to the purpose of the magazine.
Character:
The photographed male is a successful American singer 'Usher' who is recognised around the world.
Composition:
His position on the cover is a much laid back and relaxed pose. He also has his ring finger sticking up, which with a quick glance seems as if he is raising his middle finger at you giving off a 'vibe' that he is very relaxed and in some way arrogant.
Costume:
His clothing looks very casual, he's wearing a white- tee which a beige jacket. The outfit has been chosen to relate to his style and the vibe of the magazine cover, his cool and laid back style would appeal to girls and women because of the sexy/ rugged look he is pulling off. His jewellery/accessories shows us that he is a wealthy celebrity by the big black and gold watch, the silver ring and the gold Louis Vuitton shades.
NVC: His non verbal communication is very mysterious and keeps the readers wondering on what he is thinking. His tilting head also looks as if he is analyzing you.
Lighting: The lighting is bright and the photograph presents daytime.
Setting: The setting seems to be a building which is hard to see because it has been blurred out.
Cover-lines:
The main cover-line says a little about the photographed male; " Usher the king is back he's No.1 and married with a vengeance" this relates to the fact that he had taken a break on his career for a while and is now back and No.1 on the charts and also in that time got married. By the cover-line stating that "he's back" relates t o the fact that he has come back in 2008 looking more like a mature man than precious years. The other cover-lines doesn't only focus on music but celebrity gossip as well; "15 shocking celebrity sex scandals". All of the cover-lines are based around celebrity, gossip, music and style, all the cover-lines use San serif font and different colours in order to make the page interesting and stand out to the buyers/readers. This suggest that Vibe magazine is a recent magazine even though it was created in the late 90's, that is when things where designed to appeal to the younger generation. This tells the readers that they receive upcoming information about artists and celebrities, such as the cover-line at the top of the page talks about allegations about the boy band B2K and manager Chris Stokes.
Target Audience:
The most likely target audience for this magazine would be female as well as male but most likely female aged 15-35, reasons being is that the photographed male is a sexy male icon which he would appeal to more of the younger generation up until the early 30's.

The most likely target audience for this magazine would be female as well as male but most likely female aged 15-35, reasons being is that the photographed male is a sexy male icon which he would appeal to more of the younger generation up until the early 30's.

This magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a woman who is looking directly at the camera but at an angle. It is a medium shot showing from her thigh upwards. The background of the photo is a very dark blue, which cover majority of the magazine cover but then get a tad lighter in the top right hand corner. The Billboard masthead is positioned behind the women, whereas cover-lines which are in different shades of blue and white are positioned in front and beside the photographed women. The women's name is further down the page on the left hand side in white which then blends into blue. A fan web page is also visible in the bottom right hand corner.
Masthead:
The Billboard Masthead is very distinguished; white with the (b, a and d) coloured in with red, blue and green, gives the masthead a unique look. The font used is San serif, only the first letter is in capitals whereas the others are in lower case letters. Even though the masthead is in and informal text, the masthead seems very elegant and mature. The word Billboard is a large poster put up usually on the side of buildings, this suggest that the magazine is a big thing and well established.
Character:
The photographed women is an well-known American singer, actress and business women 'Beyonce Knowles'
Composition:
She is posed in a elegant and seductive way, gently resting her hands on her waist while slightly arching her back, showing off her curvy figure.
Costume:
Her clothing is a simple white slim-fit dress which accentuates her curves. The white dress also links to the white masthead, which by her wearing a white dress sticks to the theme. Her hair is simply pushed back and slightly coiffed which is almost identically similar to how her hair is in her albums (2009), as well as her make up it is very simplistic overall relating to the more relaxed and elegant magazine cover, which relates to her personality. She is also wearing no jewellery at all which also links to the fact that the photo is very simple and calm.
NVC: Her non verbal communication is unexplainable and your unsure of what she is thinking, also her right eyebrow being raised also makes her nvc mystifying. She is also looking at the camera but with her head facing the left.
Lighting: The lighting is slightly dim, possibly due to the fact of the dark background, as the photo is meant to portray night time.
Setting: The dark background connotes sky, giving the illusion of night time. Keeping with the classy and elegant theme.
Cover-lines:
The main cover-line which is important in the photograph is "Our women of the year, Beyonce" this is making a reference to the fact that her album in 2009 was at the top of the charts for 10 weeks which she has been the only women in 51 years to do so and she was also given an award at the Billboard women music event for that. In her album 'Beyonce' her songs are very calm and mellow which relates to the way she is styled in the photograph. The cover-lines are mainly based on women artist in the music industry and only mentions male artist twice on the cover. The cover-lines only concentrates on musicians, artist mentioned on the cover-lines are Beyonce, Lady Gaga Wale and Jenni Rivera. The cover-lines are positioned around the photographed women in order for the image to stand out. Also all the cover-lines are all in San serif font. The cover-lines also tackle a variety of different song genres in order to appeal to a wide range of people.
Target Audience:
Taking into consideration all these points the main target audience will be female but not as much male readers.
Aged 18-45, most young adults see Beyonce as a role model and a fashion icon, reasons why there most likely to buy the magazine. Also another target audience would be people who have a wide range of music liking's and have an interest in American music and culture.
Denotation:
This magazine cover shows a colour photograph of a woman who is looking straight at the camera. It is a long shot, showing her feet all the way to the top of her head. She is standing with her legs wide apart and her hands on her waist. The background of the photograph is an outdoor cartoons theme with a blue sky, white clouds, blue grass and multicoloured flowers. The Vibe masthead is behind the photographed women, and on the left and right side of the women are the mastheads in black, white and pink. At the top right hand corner is the photographed women's name is in pink and white. An issue date and bar code is visible at the bottom left hand corner.
Masthead:
The Vibe masthead is very memorable the large bold font stands out and catches your eye. For this masthead white is used in order to go with the theme of the magazine cover. The font used is San serif font making it more of an informal magazine, which then appeals to everyone. Vibe is a word which is usually used to describe whether a type of music has created a good vibe; (e.g. at an event). The colour of the masthead matches with the costume of the photographed women, which the magazine cover keeps to a colour scheme.
Character:
The women in the cover photograph is a well-know and successful American rapper 'Nicki Minaj'.
Composition:
The photographed women is posed in and superhero kind of way. Her body language is very provocative and suggests that she is almost in a way a superwoman.
Costume:
Her clothing is very seductive and she seems to be going with the theme of a Harajuka Barbie look which she first introduced herself as when starting in the music industry. The top half of her clothes seem to be painted onto her body and the lower half is a pink skirt with a white cook apron, given the impression that she is almost a sexy house wife. Her knee-high rubber boots are chosen carefully in order to appeal to her target audience. Her hair is a bright orange which goes with her extravagant and outgoing look. Her puffy shoulders with chains hanging from it and her colourful make up completes the look of an Harajuka Barbie and appeals to the readers more.
NVC: Her non verbal communication is seductive; she is licking her lip which shows her white teeth and tongue, she is also looking straight at the camera.
Lighting: The lighting is fairly bright, which the camera tries to portray daytime.
Setting: The setting shows a background almost in cartoon form of outside at daytime.
Cover-lines:
The main cover-line on the magazine is the photographed woman's name "Nicki Minaj: hip-hop's new superwoman to the rescue" suggesting that she is coming to the music industry to save hip-hop because before she came it was slowly dying out, however she is going to be a superwoman and help rescue it from crumbling even more. Another reason to why they described Nicki Minaj as a "superwoman" is because in 2020 she was at the top of the charts for several of weeks. The different cover-lines tells me that the magazine doesn't only focus on music but actors, athletes and comedians which shows the readers that the magazine can be very versatile. All cover-lines are written in San serif font this gives the magazine a younger look. Some cover-lines are bigger and bolder than others possibly because one cover-line is more important than another or more interesting. The cover-line that says " the last songs of Michael Jackson" tells the readers that the magazine also talks about old time great artist, showing that it can also appeal to a more matured reader.
Target audience:
The main target audience for this magazine would be an equal amount of male and female, 18- 35. Who both would have a good understanding about current American music/ non related music culture.
Denotation:
The cover of the magazine consists of a colour photo of a woman looking directly at the camera. The camera shot is a medium shot which shows her hips, arms and head. The Monarch masthead is placed behind the photographed womans head, whereas the cover-lines are placed in front of the photographed woman and also and a web link is also placed on the cover on the bottom right hand corner. The layout of the magazines seems a bit messy and hard to read because the page is quite busy.
Masthead:
Monarch masthead is a bloody red, making it stand out and making it more noticeable than other magazine covers. The font used is San serif, however looks more of an old fashion font almost something that would be used for a newspaper. The word monarch means a person or thing which holds an dominant position, suggesting that the magazine is more dominant to all the others. The fact that the magazine is called Monarch, which only a few amount of countries have a monarchy, which is sort of outdated, suggesting that the magazine has been around for some time. However the masthead doesn't really tell the audience that the magazine is about music.
Character:
The photographed women is a successful American singer 'Kelly Rowland'.
Composition:
She is posed in a way as if she was dancing which comes of across very sexual way.
Costume:
Her costume is all black, shes wearing black hot pants with a big lever waist belt on top, with a black stripy bikini top which is very provocative. The photo seems to be going for a very rugged /sexy look.
NVC:
Her non verbal communication is semi- seductive which she isn't so provocative. Her mouth is slightly open which is showing her teeth and bright red lips.
Setting:
There isn't any setting but just a white background which contrast with the black and red, making the image and the text stand out.
Cover-lines:
One of the main cover-lines which relates to her photograph says "Kelly Rowland, talks motivation" this is relating back to a piece of music she had done in 2011 called 'motivation' which in the video she wore similar clothing to the one on the magazine cover. By simply reading the cover-lines you notice that the magazine isn't just based at music but is diverse and also focuses on subject such as politics "Black leadership in the age of Obama". the cover-lines also talk about other cultures and not just the American one, "Spanish retreat" this suggest that the magazine is a world wide magazine and doesn't only relate to Americans. The cover-line placed at the top of the magazine cover which says "Business professional lifestyle" shows the readers that the magazine also appeals top people with a more intellectual mind and likes to read about current events.
Target Audience:
The target audience would be male and female which would be and equal amount of both, although its a music magazine it also talks about everyday life, which most adults (25-35) enjoy to read. They would have a good understanding of music culture as well as everyday life.
